Making Waves with Swim Dynamics

By Amanda Swank, publisher of MacKID Lakeland-Bartow-Mulberry, FL January 2, 2025

Whether you're diving into a pool, swimming in the ocean, or relaxing by the lake, water can refresh and rejuvenate. Particularly in Florida, we have the unique ability to find water everywhere. However, with its beauty and fun also comes risk. Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death, and many water-related incidents can be avoided if people have the right skills and knowledge — particularly the ability to swim.

Knowing how to swim is one of the most important water safety skills you can have. It’s not just about enjoying a day at the pool or the beach; it’s about protecting yourself and others in and around water.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children aged 1–4 have the highest drowning rates, with most of these incidents occurring in home pools or other natural bodies of water. Starting swim lessons early can drastically reduce the risk of drowning by teaching children how to swim and follow safety rules around water.

That’s why Swim Dynamic Lakeland is dedicated to teaching water safety to people of all ages. We are aware that every swimmer develops at a different rate. Our certified instructors are equipped with a “toolbox” of skills to use to help make each individual a successful swimmer. Although there is no such thing as “drown-proofing”, we are confident in our training and experience and have had great success teaching swimmers of all ages for over fifteen years.

Our Parent Interactive Classes

HATCHLINGS - ages 4 months - 2 years

Swimmers in this age group will work through skills as they progress toward the following goals:

- learning safety skills and responding appropriately

- submersion and breath control

- floating independently

- introduction to swimming

By the time swimmers finish the HATCHLINGS program, they should be working on short-distance assisted swims and be able to either float independently or turn themselves around and return to a given destination, should they fall or jump into the water.

CYGNETS - ages 2 - 4 years

Our CYGNET stations are designed to reach swimmers ages 2 and up. CYGNET stations often progress quickly and skills tend to overlap as swimmers develop their techniques.  Once CYGNETS are able to maintain themselves in the water for longer periods of time, swimming longer distances and taking breaths on their own, they are ready to progress to the next level.

SWANS - ages 4 - 12 years

Once swimmers have learned the CYGNET skills, they progress as a Swim Dynamic SWAN, where they will work on additional skills needed to make a well-rounded swimmer.  As they are promoted, swimmers will move through the SWAN stations, from beginning stroke technique all the way to advanced skills needed to join a swim team.

By teaching children water safety principles we give them the tools they need to make safe decisions around water as they grow older. Plus, learning to swim gives kids a sense of accomplishment and empowerment that can stay with them for a lifetime.

Swim Dynamics also offers unique private classes and lessons for teens and adults. Because the weather in Florida permits year-round swimming, Swim Dynamic offers year-round lessons. The next session begins on January 13. For more information or to sign up for swim lessons, visit swimdynamiclakeland.com or find us on Facebook or Instagram.
