How to Make a Necklace For Your Mask

Helping kids to not lose their mask

By Maricarmen Chavez-Walker August 15, 2020

One of the things that I worry about when going out with my son is that he not lose his mask before we arrive at our destination. I can't even count how many times we arrive at a store and he has no idea where he put the mask. It could be in the car, on the floor and most of the times it is laying in the driveway at home.

This idea came out of sheer frustration - he needs a mask holder and I need it to be cheap because he will probably lose the necklace too. This is a very easy craft that takes a few minutes to complete. Supplies are easy to find as well.

Supplies:

  1. Eyeglass chains or eyeglass cords
  2. Jewelry Clasp or Lobster Clasp for necklaces - make sure they are big enough to go around the elastic on the masks
  3. Small elastic hair bands or Loom  bands

Eyeglass chains can be easily found on amazon. If you would prefer to shop locally I've seen them at Dollar Tree, Walgreens and Dollar General.  Just make sure they have the rubber band at the bottom. The jewelry clasp and lobster clasp are sold at any craft store as well as on Amazon. The small elastic bands are found in almost any store next to hair ties. For this craft I used elastic loom bands because we own a million of them.

Take the elastic band and insert it through the hole at the bottom of the clasp. Then take one of the ends and pull it in between the other loop. Essentially you are making a knot. Do this for two clasps.

Now you will need the eyeglass chain and the clasp with band attached. Take the elastic on the clasp and pull it through the loop on the eyeglass chain. One it is looped pull the elastic over and around the clasp making another knot. Now your clasps are attached to the necklaces and ready to use!

We have a few chains hung up in our Family Command Station to make it easier to keep ourselves organized.
