Decorating for any holiday makes me happy. I especially love making decorations with my son that do not require a lot of materials or time. Salt Dough is the perfect medium for making colorful, inexpensive and pretty decorations. We used our Salt Dough to make a colorful banner as well as to hang on plants inside our house.
Ingredients/Materials
- 1 cup flour
- 1/2 cup salt
- 1/3 cup water
- Bowl
- Rolling pin
- Baking sheet
- Cookie Cutters
Directions
- Mix flour and salt together
- Add a little bit of water and stir. Repeat until all water is added.
- Use your hands to start to knead the dough.
- Sprinkle a little flour on the counter/table and roll out the dough with the rolling pin
- Make sure the dough is at least 1/4 inch thick. I am not good at measuring this out so I use the width of a straw to measure out thickness.
- Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes. If you are going to hang them use a straw to cut out the hole on top
- Bake at 300 degrees for up to 30 minutes.
- Let cool and decorate
Notes/Tips
- If the mix is too sticky add a little more flour, If it is too crumbly add more water. Salt dough is really forgiving
- If you don't have cookie cutters on hand you can make templates out of cardboard, use a drinking glass to cut circles, or cut shapes freehand.
- The cookie cutter we used was a metal heart shape that I bent to make an egg/carrot shape.
- You can use chalk, Crayons, paint, watercolors, felt, fabric, glitter with glue to decorate. Basically you can use whatever you have on hand.
- You can add food coloring to the dough when adding the water to make the dough a color.
- You can also spray paint the salt dough and then decorate. Make sure to follow the instructions on the spray paint!
The possibilities for decorating and shapes are endless!
