Mental Health Awarness: Best Self Vs Anit Self

May is Mental Health Awarness Month

By Julia Williams April 16, 2019

I was watching the Dr. Phil show today (who doesn't love Dr. Phil) and the show was about mental health and our children. The New York Times best-selling author of Best Self: Be You, Only Better explains an exercise that we can practice with our children at home to really get an idea of how they are feeling.

"When you’re your best self, you’re being your authentic self, so our best authentic self,” says Life Coach Mike Bayer. “The anti-self is the characteristics that we think get in the way of being our best self.

Here is how to do the exercise:

1.) Give your self and your child two blank sheets of paper.

2.) Ask your self and your child to write out characteristics of your "Best Self". What are things that make up the "real" you on the inside.

3.) Ask your self and your child to write out characteristics of your "Anti Self". These are traits that prevent us from being our best self. The way we think of out selves, our actions etc.

4.) Draw a picture of your Anti self and name it.

5.) Review each others responses together and talk about why you feel the way you do. Why did you name your Anti self what you did. How can each of you help each other in being the Best Self you can be?
